Change Quotes: Ignore Change, Experience Decay

It's Inevitable

It's Inevitable

Change happens all the time and there are plenty of change quotes providing words of wisdom about how we should cope. The following quote, however, really grabbed my attention:

He who rejects change is the architect of decay.  The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery.  ~ Harold Wilson

It’s a scary thought, isn’t it? As it stands, change is constant. It’s all around us and not going anywhere anytime soon. So why do we fear it so much?

You know This and I know This

Many times, change represents the unknown and we do not like the unknown. This is the main reason why change receives such resistance. For better or worse, you are a creature of habit and the prevailing thought is often, “Better the devil I know, then the devil I do not know.”

The Change Question

Can you learn to embrace change? Sure you can. But,  and this is a big but,  change messes with your comfort zone.  It forces you out of the status quo and that’s just plain uncomfortable. The truth of the matter is – where change is concerned you either pay now or later.

The Decay

The problem is you have to learn to not just think of change in the present moment. You have to learn to look down the road a little,  into the future – so to speak. You can do this, because the signs are often there. However, in your desire not to have to deal with change, those signs are often ignored. This is how decay sets in. To help you see what I mean, I provide the following examples as change quotes :

  • Have you or somebody you know ever avoided learning new technology, because you liked the way things were? If it’s on the job, you’re left behind and become obsolete. If it’s in society, you can become helpless in certain areas, because you can’t use the new technology. It becomes frustrating.
  • How about in a relationship? One partner grows and the other doesn’t. They share nothing in common anymore and the relationship decays until they divorce, separate, or breakup.
  • How about a change in your life that you see can be problematic? However, you chose to ignore it, because you do not feel the  pain yet.  You take your chances hoping for better circumstances, or that the issue simply goes away (signs of illness, creation of debt, the effects of stress). Then, the unthinkable happens – you pay the price. The pain sets in and its worse than you ever imagined.

The Secret About Change

There is one simple truth about change that NEVER changes. Either you change because you want to or you’ll change because you have to. It usually boils down to timing. I will tell you one thing – experience has taught me that it’s much harder and painful when you wait to change because you have to.

Take Stock of Your Current Situation

I humbly suggest you look at your life and those areas where change is pressing. What can you do avoid unpleasant decay? If you start paying attention to change and acting upon it, your life will be much happier.
