If you are like most people, then you are focused on how you can better your life. You have goals, desires to earn more money, or wishes for more material things. Sometimes, you can become so focused on what you want that you can’t fully appreciate what you already have. Sometimes, watching others who have what you want leads to envy or jealously.  Sometimes, the desire for more causes extra pressure or more stress. Sometimes, it leads to depression or disappointment.

Don’t get me wrong, you should strive for more and better in your life. However, there is an important fact you need to consider if you want to experience more happiness and contentment in life.

The Lesson To Be Learned

Appreciate what you already have. Maybe your life isn’t as you would like it, but it could always be worse. Life and people are not perfect; but life is good, because you get to experience it. Growing up, my mother didn’t always have money to put the best food on our table. However, many of my favorite dishes resulted from her making the most out of what we did have to eat. She was creative with our meals. More importantly, she made sure that dinner time wasn’t just about eating – but a time our family could be together to share our day and simply share how much we cared about each other. It was precious time in which I’ll always remember.

Keep It Simple

Maybe it’s just me, but more has a way of complicating things. For example, I have a perfectly good pair of blue high-heeled pumps for work.  However, I decided that I had to have this new style of shoe I saw a co-worker wear to the office. For several weekends, I searched high and low for this shoe. I couldn’t find it.  I was tired and a little irritated. I went through all of this for something that I didn’t really need in the first place. How crazy is that? What about you? What do you want in spite of the fact that you already have it?

Want Doesn’t Equal Need

Here’s the second part of the lesson. Just because you want something doesn’t mean you need it. One of my personal goals is to appreciate what I already have a bit longer. What do I mean? Well, I have a perfectly good car that is 10 years old. It runs fine and it’s paid for. Everyone keeps telling me I need to get a new car. Why? While my car may not be the fanciest, it’s mine. Why create a car payment if I don’t need to? The same holds true for my television set. I don’t have a fancy big screen television with all the bells and whistles, but what I do have works just fine.

These inspirational thoughts really do ring true. What really matters is what you do with what you have. This advise can make a positive difference in your life.
