Inspirational Thoughts for the Procrastination Bug

My thoughts today center around the dreaded word….PROCRASTINATION. There is nothing worse than trying to overcome it once it’s snags you in its clutches. I’m sure you can relate.

Have you ever put off a task to the point where it wore you out just thinking about it? It zaps your energy,  doesn’t it? However, this usually isn’t enough to move you into action right away.

Honestly, it depends on the task you are putting off. Let’s face it. Usually, the things you put off are either difficult, time consuming, or something you do not want to do. Most of the time, you are quick to hop into action when you want to do something. I know I am.

So, how do you break the grips of procrastinations? Here are several inspirational thoughts that may help:

1. If you can pass the task off onto someone else, then do it. I have no shame in recommending this. Why do something you are dreading if you don’t have to? Believe me, there are people who would love to do what you are putting off – well, maybe.

For instance, I hate doing yard work. However, we have a kid in our neighborhood who loves it (of course, he gets paid). Nonetheless, this kid takes great pride from his contribution to the beauty in our neighborhood. More power to him. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a win – win. Plus, I like to think I’m making the Kid’s day. :)

2. If you’re not in a position to delegate the dreaded task, then resign yourself to getting it done. Time is going to pass anyway.  Start by breaking  the task into smaller segments and then get started. Why prolong the inevitable? All it does is flame the negative feelings that come from not wanting to do the darn task in the first place.

3. If you can’t readily find the benefits of completing the task, then reward yourself once you are done. This can serve as the incentive you need to get moving.

4. Visualize yourself doing the tasks and completing it. Just because your body isn’t ready to move into action, doesn’t mean your mind can’t. Eventually, your thoughts will urge you to action.

5. Sometimes, you simply have to kick your own butt. Just do it! Force yourself to take that first step, because it’s always the hardest.

The bottom line is this, procrastination will do you in if you let it. Here’s more to think about. When you put off doing what you need to do, it hampers your happiness and sense of joy. With that, I leave you with the following inspirational thoughts from several procrastination quotes:

  • Do not wait for ideal circumstances, nor the best opportunity; they will never come.  ~  Janet Erskine Stuart
  • Performance releases pressure.  ~  Anonymous
  • Procrastination is the thief of time.  ~  Edward Young
