Letting Go Quotes: It’s History, You’re Not

My inspirational thoughts for this post focus on purging some hurtful or painful things in your life. You can ‘clean house’ so to speak. You can prune away the bad weeds and seeds that infest your otherwise happier garden. It may be difficult and take a few attempts, but you can do it.

Think about how much better your life would be if you could simply separate the people and situations in your life into two categories: helpful or hurtful. Imagine the joy of, then, tossing out the hurt and pain – permanently banishing those things from your life. Here’s why it’s not so easy. In spite of the unpleasantness of whatever you are dealing with -  a bad relationship, a poor habit, negative people, painful memories, a huge mistake, a horrible situation, etc….

People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar.  ~  Thich Nhat Hanh

The fact is, your negative experiences are deep in your subconscious. It’s like being burned by fire and experiencing the pain. I’m sure you think many things about yourself, but you’re not stupid. You’re not going to be willingly burned again, or set yourself up for something worse. Hence, you prefer to stick with the devil you know. After all, your natural instincts are self-perservation. You want to protect yourself as best you can.

Courage is the power to let go of the familiar.  ~  Raymond Lindquist

Here’s the problem with settling for what you know. It keeps you anchored to your past – stuck in history or the moment. Additionally, you focus from a negative perspective – not allowing yourself to envision a future that can be better  (much better if you are brave enough to reach for it).

Some of us think holding on makes us strong, but sometimes it is letting go.  ~  Herman Hesse

Here’s something else to consider. You are not strong for staying with a situation that harms you. You are making excuses to remain a hostage. Your strength comes from being brave and taking a risk for a better future.  So, are you willing to let go of something or someone who is hurting your happiness and life?

Pruning and purging are painful and not easy. However, you have to be willing to cut some stuff out of your life to free up room to experience the good things waiting for you. Can you walk out on history that painful? Consider taking one small step towards a better future.

At this very moment, I simply ask you draw strength from these inspirational thoughts. Use these ‘letting go’ quotes as the springboard to better things to come in your life. Start by thinking of one small step you can do today to start purging and pruning. It can be something as simple as devising a plan to lose all the negative people in your life. Maybe you can start with those negative people you do not see often?

I’m going to leave you with one of my all-time favorite inspiring quotes. I refer to it every single time major change happens in my life.  It goes:

When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us. ~ Alexander Graham Bell

Be willing to take a chance. Walk out of the painful parts of your history and look forward to opening a new door or two.
