Inspirational Thoughts to Help You Stop Wasting This Gift

by Kim on February 9, 2010

Have you ever heard the following inspirational thoughts: Don’t postpone joy?

Many people postponed joy; hence, wasted opportunities to experience the wonderful feeling that comes with it. Instead, another day goes by.

Unfortunately, it’s so easy to get caught up in planning for tomorrow and striving for goals, that we lose out on the small burst of happiness to be had each day. You see, we overlook the little things that can add so much joy to our lives, because we wait and strive for that something bigger. Think about the following inspirational saying.

We either make ourselves happy or miserable. The amount of work is the same. ~ Carlos Castaneda

It’s true. Being miserable or happy takes the same amount of work. It’s your attitude and perception that makes all the difference in the work. That lens through which you view the world holds the key to how you feel and think right now. Your view also determines when and if you will experience joy today.

Here’s a short story to illustrate how our perceptions can be deceiving.

One day, there was a restaurant full of people trying to have a nice evening meal. However, they were distracted by a father and his rowdy kids. The kids were yelling and screaming and irritating everyone.

The  father, however, appeared oblivious – simply staring off into space. Well, one irritated man who was trying to enjoy his meal approached the Father.

“Excuse me,” he said through tightly pinched lips. “You’re children are causing quite a disturbance.”

The Father looked at the man and sighed sadly,

“I’m sorry. No, I didn’t realize. You see, their mother just passed away and it’s been hard on all of us.”

Immediately, that irritated man changed his perception of the situation. He was no longer irritated but sympathized with the man’s plight. He asked if there was something he could do to help.

What’s the lesson for you? Well, we are often likely to jump to conclusions about people and situations based on our perceptions. Each irritation, negative thought, and unhappy feeling steals your joy in that moment. Don’t continue to allow this to happen.

Think about this, a person who lives to be seventy has approximately 2.2 million seconds in his/her life. If you spend 8 hours working each day and at least 6 hours sleeping, that is a little over 1/2 million seconds you already miss out on. The point is that every minute you postpone your joy or allow an opportunity to slip through your fingers, is gone.

The great news is that you still have time left. You get to determine your future joy. So – start with tomorrow.

What little joy are you determined to experience? All it takes is one small joyous step.

As always, I like to leave you with inspirational thoughts to think about:

The happiest people don’t worry too much about whether life is fair or not, they just get on with it. – Andrew Matthews

Now cherish your joy. You are so worth it. Remember, use inspirational thoughts to always remind you how precious a gift is the ability to
create and experience joy.
