Why You Must Be Cautious of Sad Quotes

by Kim on February 12, 2010

You have to be careful when it comes to sad quotes. After all, misery loves company.  Have you ever noticed when people are discomforted or unhappy they are more apt to tell and commiserate with others who feel the same?

There are many names for such negative preferences such as:  pity party, the blame game, and the “life’s unfair”  proclamation. So what does this have to do with sad quotes? Everything!

Most of the time, we like to find information that reaffirms our feelings and/or emotions – quotes about sadness can do that for you. Often times, those negative quotations can remind us why we have a right to feel as we do – providing permission to prolong the grief.

Additionally, unhappy quotes help you feel better, because at least you know the author of that quote, at one time or another, was just as miserable as you are. Truly! Many people feel BETTER in knowing that somebody else is just as sad as they are.  After all, they can understand.

Here’s the problem though, sad quotes can keep you focused from a negative perspective.  This may lengthen your misery and cause you to miss out on the positive things waiting on the other side of your sad experience.

Don’t get me wrong – sad quotes can be powerful – digging into some of the deepest and intensely negative emotions you have. This may prove good for a ‘getting over it’ period, but don’t get caught up. Focus on a more positive future. Do you want to know why?

“Nobody really cares if you’re miserable, so you might as well be happy.”   ~   Cynthia Nelms

Yes, the above quote is true. At some point, any and everyone will get tired of your sadness. It’s human nature. They may even start to feel weighed down by it. So do yourself a big favor – take control. Be determined. I’m not saying it will be easy, but staying in a place of sadness and leaning on others isn’t the answer either.

As someone who always tries to find the positives in life. There is a benefit to sad, negative experiences. The following quote sums things up nicely.

“We enjoy warmth because we have been cold. We appreciate light because we have been in darkness. By the same token, we can experience joy because we have known sadness.”  ~  David Weatherford

So remember, use caution with sad quotes. Never forget that EVERYONE experiences ups and downs. Therefore, if you run across an unhappy quote you can related to, acknowledge it and be strong. You have your whole life ahead of you. Never use your time to validate why it is okay to be a victim, because you deserve better than that.  Know that the power is all yours, because; ultimately, you control your life. So chose wisely.

“You can chose to be happy or sad and whichever you choose that is what you get. No one is really responsible to make someone else happy, no matter what most people have been taught and accept as true.” ~  Sidney Madwed
