3 Causes of Procrastination and How It Hurts Your Life

by Kim on March 1, 2010

There are many causes of procrastination:  those tasks that we don’t want to do, so we put them off; those things we don’t know how to do, so we put them off; those things we know we should do, but suffer no negative consequences, so we put them off.

Does any of the above reasons for procrastinating sound familiar? Let’s face it. If we want to do something and we are excited about it – we don’t put if off. We tackle that activity or event with gusto – enjoying every minute of it.

Most people are sucked into procrastinating for three reasons: the effort needed; the lack of action; and the lack of pain or immediate consequences.

Think about the times when you procrastinate. If you are like me, you get so caught up in dread of what needs to be done that you lose focus. Unfortunately, you focus on causes of procrastination instead of action and progress. It’s a common problem that can be solved. This is why I recommend you take advantage of  these procrastination quotes.

However, read the following story. It’s an eye-opener and one I’m sure you can relate to.

A Real Life Story – The Negatives of Procrastinating

The company I used to work for is reducing it’s workforce. How do I know? My old co-workers are fretting about it. Here’s the kicker – this was talked about for the past four years.

Four Years!!

It’s just that the company finally decided to act on it.

Now, the proactive people who moved to action and prepared for the potential negative impact are not as concerned. You see, they took courses to improve skills or provide new career opportunities. They saved money and/or found new income generating opportunities.

The people fretting and worrying are the people who did absolutely NOTHING.

That’s right. There are people who placed their heads in the sand figuring they would not be impacted.  These same people who procrastinated for the past four years  now must face the pain of their inaction.

Here is the lesson. Do not ignore the many warning signs that clue you of potential problems down the road. There is a saying that goes, “you pay now or you pay later.”  Just know, you will pay one way or the other so why not on your own terms?

Don’t let this procrastination quote be you:

“And all that you are sorry for is what you haven’t done.  ~  Margaret Widdemer”

Do not set yourself up for regrets or problems that can be avoided. Be determined to NOT let the common causes of procrastination hurt your life.
